Thinking of an accompaniment to salads or soups? Bored of the usual breads and dips as appetizers? Looking for a quick starter for game-day? The answer to all these questions lie in this singular dish; Cheese straws.
Few ingredients, not very time consuming and no expertise required. It takes under 30 minutes and you can get a bulk of these straws ready to impress any crowd! You can also make it ahead of time and serve it with Marinara Sauce or even without it!! Here is the simple recipe to turn store bought puff pastry into a marvelous finger food.
Ingredients
Puff pastry sheets, even numbered sheets
Cheese, 1/2 cup shredded
Seasoning mix
Butter or Cooking Spray
Method
Preheat oven to 400 F. In a baking tray, line parchment paper or grease it with butter or cooking spray. Thaw the puff pastry to room temperature. Once it is at room temperature, roll the sheet to a large, thin film of about 2 mm thickness. Try to maintain the squarish shape to get even sized sticks. Repeat with another puff pastry sheet, ensuring the size of both the squares is almost the same.
Lay one sheet on the counter and sprinkle cheese liberally on it. I used store bought three cheese blend, but you can use any shredded cheese of your choice. Sprinkle the seasoning mix on the cheese and lay the other puff pastry sheet on it. Lightly press down the puff pastry sheet so that it sticks to the one below. Now cut the puff pastry sheets into thin slices of about 1 inch thickness.
Place the cut puff pastry on the baking tray. Start rolling the thin slices such that you get about 3-4 turns. Brush little butter on it. You can also brush them with egg wash if desired. Bake the sticks for 15 minutes, turning them over once at about 7-8 minutes.
Once they are little brown, remove from the oven and cool on cooling rack. Once completely cool transfer to airtight container and enjoy with any soup or salad of your choice. These sticks can be stored in airtight containers for a week to ten days!!
